In 1951 some local people from Sealy, Brookshire, and Katy formed an association with the objective of building a golf course near San Felipe, Texas. They selected as their site a tract of land located on a bend in the Brazos River. This site, covered by heavy underbrush and large native pecan trees, was part of a larger tract donated to the State of Texas in 1936 by the town of San Felipe for use as a State Park. Stephen F. Austin Golf Club is a lifestyle over 50 years in the making.
Featuring the natural contours of the land with several small streams, and tightly placed among several thousand native pecan trees, the present 18-hole course teems with wildlife. Several generations of white-tail deer live in this heavily wooded triangle bounded by the Brazos River and the state park. On any given day as golfers admire the narrow tree-lined fairways and struggle with the relatively small greens protected by sand traps, they will probably see more deer than birdies. But, be alert, occasionally a player spots an eagle.
